THE ART:
Originally, Kalamkari was used as a means to tell a story. Tales of the court as well as the prevalent rulers’ bravery were illustrated on large canvases.
It is amazing that a 3000 year old craft still survives, unaltered and majestic in its very simplicity.

THE FABRIC:
The cloth used for Kalamkari printing is generally unbleached calico (gada), which craftsmen prefer to bleach themselves. Sizing and impurities in the cloths are removed by taking it in a cow-dung to which is added a milky liquid which is a crude kind of soap made by mixing washing soda solution and castor oil. The cloth is kept in the solution for a whole night, taken out, washed in the flowing water, and beaten well on stone, to make it soft and absorbent.
